How many days does a Vietnamese need to work to afford iPhone 16 Pro?

nelson

Question

One Vietnamese, earning the average local wage, would have to work about 47.2 days to afford the purchase of one iPhone 16 Pro, 128 GB. Such a calculation is derived based on the official price of this model and average monthly income in Vietnam, divided by the typical number of workdays in one month.

Comparatively, US people would have to work about 5.1 days, while those in Turkey would have to work about 72.9 days.

The iPhone 16 Pro will be more affordable in Vietnam because of the retail price in relation to the average local wage. Assuming the estimates by various sources, such as Picodi's iPhone index, are true, an average worker in Vietnam can buy the device after working for approximately 47.2 days, supposing he uses his total income on the gadget.

This figure shows the growing trend where so many lower-average wage countries have to work considerably longer and longer hours to afford high luxury items than their peers in wealthy countries.

Relatively,

• Most of them, like Turkey, top the list, with some needing to work up to about 72.9 days for just the same phone.

• Switzerland is on the top of the bottom list, where an average worker would need only 4 days of income to buy an iPhone 16 Pro.

At 47.6 days of estimated work time in India, it is nearly equal in value to the Vietnamese estimate.

The affordability of an iPhone, therefore, varies dramatically depending on local economic conditions, wage levels, and how much the phone has been priced in any particular market. This in and of itself constitutes a greater economic inequality when it comes to attaining goods that are usually perceived as a luxury globally.

But when the numbers are laid out like this, it's a real reminder of how unevenly distributed wealth is around the world: A Vietnamese worker has to work more than one and a half months for an iPhone, while someone in the U.S. needs only five days of wages. And it gets even more extreme in the case of Turkey-it takes almost 73 days.

I'd be particularly interested to hear how this works out in other parts of the world. What about European countries that fall more into the middle of average incomes, like Portugal or Greece? Or even African nations like Nigeria? Anyone have insights or similar data for those?"

These comments should continue to incite more discussion and introduce global viewpoints, including at least some sense of economic disparity.

This comparison truly highlights how wealthy certain countries are and how difficult it is in others to pay for items such as the iPhone 16 Pro. Basing my argument on research done in Switzerland, a working population needs to only work for four days to purchase one; whereas people in countries like Vietnam, Turkey and India need to slog out for weeks to buy a similar phone. This variation of working hours does score a point for poverty of different countries.

Is there any such information about the same in other geographies, especially Europe or Africa or South America? In that case I would find it also interesting how long would the phone cost there and what would the workers income be in that region. Now then, let us look at one more angle and compare the availability of these luxury items in different countries and discuss the impact of local economies on the reach of these luxuries.

That is likely to encourage people the most to participate in the debate themselves and urge others to do so too.

Trying to ascertain the Nigerian situation automatically makes me snivel.

In Nigeria, the iPhone 16 (128GB) costs approximately ₦1.3 million ($799 at a rate of ₦1,640 per dollar)(Business Insider Africa). Based on the current minimum wage of ₦70,000 per month, it would take an average Nigerian worker about 18 months(547.5 days) to afford the phone if they saved their entire salary.

And even when the ₦70,000 minimum wage has not been fully implemented.

Now, tell me, where is our place in the global economic scene?
