The term UFO means Unidentified Flying Object, any aerial object or optical phenomenon that cannot be readily identified by the observer. The term came into usage shortly after World War II, in the period when reports of rocketry and guided missiles were starting to appear, along with speculation about the possible existence of alien life on other planets. Many of the sightings, however, have been ascribed to natural astronomical and meteorological phenomena: bright planets and stars, meteors, auroras, ion clouds, aircraft, and balloons.
